Brief Visits

The patch must feel pretty neglected at the moment, I managed a quick sleety visit Saturday lunchtime after Steve confirmed the Waxwings were still around in the morning. I was in luck after seeing a BUZZARD being mobbed by one of the local crows, I made my way towards the new hide and heard a faint jingling call.  I scanned the hedges and the sky and then saw the hunched bumps in the ash tree, 9 WAXWINGS! (55) facing into the wind. With more commitments in the afternoon I reluctantly trudged back to the car.
A busy day Sunday ended with a visit around 4.15pm in half light. I was hoping to add maybe some  Mandarin coming in to roost or a calling Tawny Owl but this time I was out of luck and saw and heard just a handful of species. A few REDWING flew in to roost and a  LITTLE OWL called from Park Field otherwise it was pretty quiet, hopefully I'll get in a longer visit this weekend but it's not certain at the moment.

In the Netherlands we had an invasion of waxwings but I was unfortunately not more than 1. I'm curious about your photos Alan.
Greetings, Helma

Well done on the Waxwings Alan! After spending weeks chasing round an area just 3 or 4 minutes away from me looking for a small flock I have at last got my life tick, only the one bird in the end but I saw it!! :-)

I don't know how I missed commenting on your previous post....I was sure I had :-( ....but I loved the Wren photos!

The Waxwings would be a highlight for me as well. Nice finds! I'm still looking over here to get that Big January number:)

Goodto hear you caught up with some Waxwings Alan.

Hello

I have tried in vain to locate the new hide...can you please offer some clues?

Hi, the new hide is just off the bridleway that runs from the veg garden to the house in the corner of the field that is on Digdog lane, it's about halfway down on the left, hope this helps.

Ah, the one place I haven't tried! Many thanks indeed; I'll try to get along there this weekend, thought the snow may prevent this...

Good luck, i may be around myself at some point this weekend as I can walk to the castle from home, there has been a Peregrine around and my Dad watched a Black headed gull being chased by a sparrowhawk from the hide on Tuesday.

Thanks - you are v lucky. We are only a couple of miles away, but in the snow...that said, the peregrine and waxwings are a major incentive
